Have you ever wondered how your child would cope if there was an accident? This is a question that keeps many parents up at night. The very idea of your child being forced to deal with a scary and strenuous emergency situation is probably downright scary, but as a parent, you need to make sure that they’re properly equipped to handle anything life throws their way.
Here are a few parenting tips on how your kid can deal with an emergency:
What is an emergency?
The first thing you need to do is sit down and have a talk with your child on what an emergency would constitute. Your child needs to be able to assess what an emergency is.
Calling 100 –
Does your child know the emergency helpline numbers? You need to remind your kids the emergency numbers constantly and ensure that they remember these numbers.
Make a mock phone call –
In case of an emergency, your child needs to be able to talk and explain what the problem is while calling 100.
First aid –
Your child also needs to know where the emergency kit is, and if he/she injures himself/herself, he/she needs to be able to tend to minor wounds or be able to ask for help.
Teach your children about natural hazards like earthquakes, hurricanes and what to do when they occur:
- Make a family emergency plan, and prepare an emergency kit together
- Teach your children what to do in case of a fire or other natural calamities
- Make sure your children know what to do at school if an emergency occurs
