Tests and exams can be a challenging part of school life for children and young people and their parents. Especially in times when children are competing on a daily basis, exams can be a nerve-wracking time for them.

So what can parents do help calm their kids before an exam?

Here are a few parenting tips:

  1. Watch for signs of stress

Before an exam, young children who feel anxious may experience stomach aches and headaches. They might feel irritated and face trouble sleeping, so as a parent you can assure your child that they have someone to talk to. This way you provide the support your child needs.

  1. Focus on nutrition

A balanced diet is vital for your child’s health, and can help them to feel well during exam periods. During exams, you can ensure your child does not eat outside and provide high-energy and nutritious food.

  1. Sleep

Cramming all night before an exam is usually a bad idea. Sleep will benefit your child far more than a few hours of panicky last-minute study. So you can ensure your child gets at least 8 hours of sleep before an exam.

  1. Help them to study

Make sure your child has somewhere comfortable to study. Ask them how you can best support them with their revision. You can also come up with quizzes to help your child study, while making it a fun activity.
